Joe was an accomplished pianist, attending the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Morehead State University earning his degree in music education. Joe was a music educator in many different counties in Eastern Kentucky for over 40 years. He impacted thousands of children and young people with a great desire to pursue their love of music and the fine arts. In addition to this professional career in music, Joe was a member of various Gospel singing groups, choir director, and upon his death, a member and pianist at Tom's Creek Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife Andrea, he is survived by brother Harold and wife Cathie of Paintsville and preceded in death by his sister, Mary Bryan of Paintsville. Joe is survived by his children Molli and fiancée Dustin Benge of Jackson, Dionna and husband Gregory Purvis, and son Jonathan Hall, all of Paintsville, Stephanie Graf and husband Kevin of Monroe, Ohio, and Dionne Pittenger and husband Jody of Rising Sun, Indiana. Joe passed over into the great beyond on Independence Day, during a day America celebrates our freedom and independence. Joe truly experienced the ultimate freedom and independence from sin, sickness, pain, death, sorrow, and grief. He is currently joining his voice with the eternal voices of the choirs of heaven in praise and worship of our eternal God and His blessed Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
