Our precious mother, Garnet Short Ward, has passed on to her heavenly "Mansion Over the Hilltop". Her earthly circle of life began Oct. 21, 1925 in Meally, Johnson Co., Ky and ended at her home January 27, 2021 in Cannonsburg, Boyd Co., KY. She was receiving hospice care at home. She was a glorious 95 years old. Garnet was the eldest child of Russell & Hazel Walters Short who preceded her in death.
She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ/ Christian Church. She & her husband were baptized on the same day at the Meally Church of Christ but later became a member of the Louisa First Christian Church. Most recently she was a member of the Beech St. Christian Church in Ashland, KY. Garnet was a high school graduate of Meade Memorial High School & attended Mayo Vocational School and even worked for the US Naval Dept in Washington, DC during WWII years. She served as a teachers aide but mainly as a retired bookkeeper for THE BIG SANDY NEWS when the main publishing office was in Louisa, KY.
She was married to Clifford Ward, the boy next door, for fifty-eight years, until his death in 2005. Garnet was the proud family matriarch of two daughters: Brenda Ward of Cannonsburg, Ky., and Debra Ward Caudill (Charles Michael) of Farmers, Ky., two grandsons; Michael Chase Caudill (Summer Blevins) of Staffordsville, Ky and Charles Blake Caudill (Elizabeth Nagel) of Vineland, N.J. and two great granddaughters; Caroline Eden Caudill and Catherine Esther Caudill of Staffordsville, Ky. Many loving nieces, nephews and cousins still carry on the Short/Ward family names. Garnet, the loved big sister, was preceded in death by Homer Short, J. P. Short, Janice Short Jackson and Josephine Short. She was the sister-in-law to Harold Ward, Juanita Ward & Imogene Ward Houston who have also preceded her in death.
Brother Kenneth Vaughn, Ashland, KY will preside over the outdoor funeral for extended family to be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 1 pm in the parking lot of the Paintsville Church of Christ on 11th Street in Paintsville. Funeral service will be streamed live via Facebook. Drive-thru visitation will be held from 11 am to 1 pm also at the Paintsville Church of Christ parking lot. B urial will be in Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, Staffordsville, KY.
