Joan Butcher Music of Meally, Kentucky who passed away in Mountain Manor Nursing Home on November 21, 2020 with family by her side. She was a beautiful 90 years old.

Joan was born at Paintsville Hospital on May 7, 1930 to the late Herschel Butcher and the late Lorena Roberts Butcher.  She was the late wife of Teddy Music for 53 years who passed in 2014.

Joan worked at various places providing God's service while she was here with us some of which included working Paintsville Hospital, Big Sandy Drug for Mrs. Salyer, Rexell Drug, Home Cash Grocery, in the meat department at the old IGA, helping to operate a commercial chicken farm with 53,000 laying hens, and her last job was baking homemade pies for Paintsville Lake Marina—where people would travel miles for just one slice of her famous  delicious pies.

Someone once said that, Joan was "Martha Stewart" before Martha Stewart.  She was considered the "best cook" around.  She found pleasure in sharing her love language to others through preparing great homemade foods and delicious desserts.  If you were visiting, your special food and dessert would be on the table.

Joan had a passion for serving others.  She always found time to help others in need.  Like her sister during cancer or caring for her mother during her final years.  She cared for her husband, Teddy for years while he suffered with Dementia. In fact, even when he was in the nursing home, she moved in the apartments next door and walked across the street each day to spend time with him till his battle was over.

Joan was a sweet and kind soul.  She was an advocate for the underdog.  To Joan, every person deserved second (and maybe hundreds of) chances at their mistakes and shortcomings in life.  She once even hung a jury because she couldn't believe the criminal would do such a thing and even if he did he must have been sorry for doing so.

She was a "bonus mom" to many during her lifetime.  Although she didn't give birth to them, she helped raise them or love them all the same.  Also, she helped to foster children for many years.

Joan is survived by her only son, T.C. (wife Sandy) Music of Meally, KY, her daughters, Sandy (husband Allan) Preston of AltaVista, VA, Connie Music of Paintsville, KY, Stephanie Music of Paintsville, KY, Linda (husband Bob) Davidson of Palm Coast, Florida and the late Glenda Cheek; a special grandchild, Kaitlyn McCarty; twelve grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren.

Also surviving, one brother Charles (Alma) Butcher of Catlettsburg, KY; one sister, Patty Stalnaker of Lexington, KY; special niece, Brenda (Jack) Jarrell of Williamsport, KY; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Joan's family would like to thank Mountain Manor Nursing Home of Paintsville for her loving care during her last couple of years.  Funeral services will be private to immediate family due to COVID-19 state restrictions.

Private services are scheduled for 12:00 Noon Tuesday, November 24, 2020 in the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel with Mikey Jarrell officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, KY. Private visitation will be Tuesday, November 24, 2020 from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 Noon.

There is a famous poem that in part says these words…

"I read of a man who stood to speak

At the funeral of a friend

He referred to the dates on her tombstone

From the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth

And spoke the following date with tears

But he said what mattered most of all

Was the dash between those years.

The years within that little dash

Live on in memory

And represent the precious life

Of one who's dear to me."

We all have special stories and memories of our mom, "bonus mom", grandmother, great grandmother, neighbor, and friend.  And they fill in the dash of her life.  But anyone who knows Joan would describe her as a sweet, humble, gentle and a kind soul, generous and full of love for others.

And so I end with this poem that I think mom would be saying to us if she could…

Remember me with love and joy,

Let gratitude fill your heart.

Thankful for the time we had,

Gone…yet not apart.

Celebrate the life I lived,

I will be watching from above.

I am always with you,

Sending you my light and love."
