After sharing her life with us for 84 years, 4 months and 9 days, Joann (VanHoose) Burchett of Paintsville, Kentucky went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky.

Joann was born on October 18, 1939 in Letcher County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Hurshell and Blanche (Daniel) VanHoose; and the granddaughter of the late Reverend Millard and Ethel (Walker) VanHoose and Julius and Elizabeth (VanHoose) Daniel.  In addition to her parents and grandparents, she was preceded in death by brothers Paul Vencil VanHoose, Bobbie Gene VanHoose, Charles "Kin" VanHoose and sister Clotene Conley.

Never afraid of exertion, Joann worked for a time as a young woman at the G. C. Murphy Company in downtown Paintsville and the Princess Manufacturing Company in Auxier, Kentucky.   For twenty-six years the served with the United States Postal Service, first as a relief postmaster, then in the position of Postmistress of the Wittensville Post Office.  After retirement she helped with the real estate where you could find her helping refurbish a house with a paint brush in her hand or outside planting and caring for flowers.   A visitor never encountered her without an offer of coffee and cookies or cakes.  An extraordinary woman, she was a long-time, devoted Christian who attended Southside Church for several years.

Joann is survived by her husband and best friend of 66 years, William Lewis Burchett; one son, William Kenneth Burchett of Stambaugh, Kentucky; one daughter, Myra Jo Castle of Wittensville, Kentucky; three adored grandchildren; Kenneth Dean McKenzie of Paintsville, Kentucky, Kaitlin May of Woodland Park, Colorado and Weston Layne[JP1]  Burchett of Louisville, KY; two brothers, M. J. VanHoose of Port Hope, Michigan and David VanHoose of Nippa, Kentucky and two sisters, Pearlene Stambaugh of Stambaugh, Kentucky and Bonita Daniels of East Point, Kentucky.   She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly and who cherished her dearly.

We stand at the crossroads of sorrow and cherished memories, we come together to honor the life of Joann, a beacon of love, kindness and resilience.   As we navigate through this sea of emotions, may we find comfort in the tapestry of memories woven with threads of joy, love and countless beautiful moments and the indelible mark left by a soul who touched out lives.   Joann was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.   We, the family, feel that our loss is Heaven's gain and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2024 in the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel with burial to follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens, Louisa, Kentucky. Friends may visit the Jones-Preston Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 29, 2024 and 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2024.
