Ruth Avenelle Carpenter Clay, age 91, of Paintsville, Kentucky, passed away Monday, February 27, 2023 at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, Kentucky.

Ruth was born April 6, 1931 in Paintsville, Kentucky, daughter of the late Charles Carpenter and Grace May Carpenter.  In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Walter "Cobb" Clay, one brother, Jack Carpenter, and two sisters, Juanita Carpenter and Agnes Carpenter.

She is survived by one son, Walter Douglas (Connie) Clay of Staffordsville, Kentucky, three grandchildren, Kevin Clay, Kerry (Ray) Vanwinkle, and Stacy (Sean) Poe, six great grandchildren, Channing Vanwinkle, Trey (Laken) Clay, Taylor (Justin) Ramey, Madison (Daylyn) Jones, Logan Vanwinkle and Macy Poe, four great-great grandchildren, Braxston, Braylyn, Taylyn and Briggs, nieces and nephews, Donna Carpenter LeBaron of Casey Key, Florida, David Sammons of Osprey, Florida, John Sammons of Huntington, West Virginia, and Stephen Carpenter of Tennessee.

Funeral services will be conducted 12:00 Noon Thursday, March 2, 2023 at the Southside Freewill Baptist Church with Wayne Price and Larry Smith officiating.  Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, Kentucky.  Friends may visit the Jones-Preston Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2023 and 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 Noon Thursday, March 2, 2023.
